Good morning and welcome to Theatrewise.
Friends - This week's link is: https://ruthleontheatrewise.weebly.com/blog//
This week’s Blog introduction is going to be shorter than usual because, owing to a fall outside a theatre this week, typing is a pain, in both senses of the word. Nothing serious, don’t worry, just a lot of bruises and a soft tissue injury, but it’s my right hand and it’s strapped up so use is limited. Normal service to be resumed next week, I hope.
But I do need to tell you to watch the best documentary about an artist I’ve seen. Kusama: Infiniti is a terrific film about what I might term the ‘polka dot’ painter, which is to damn her with faint praise. Once you’ve watched this film you’ll wonder why she’s not as famous as Matisse.
Also this week, the annual Jewish Book Week is making many of its live events available online and is not to be missed. Most of these are simple interviews with authors of current books but they include the most important writers talking about their latest books and they are frequently fascinating.
Increasingly, to become more accessible to an audience which may not be accustomed to the vocabulary of dance, a number of performers and companies are including spoken word in their performances. Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival has compiled a playlist of these and it’s included here, just a taste of the variety of dancers employing words to expand their audiences and bring them closer.
All these are accessible via the link and the button below and do let me know if you come across any online arts events I should include here.
This week only, Ruth Leon’s Theatrewise is top-heavy with theatre reviews. Everything seems to be opening this week so I’ve included many more Pocket Reviews of London live theatre than usual. Apologies to my farflung readers in other parts of the world, the Americas, Canada, New Zealand (is anywhere further away than New Zealand?) who can’t get here to see them and I promise to return to my usual brief, the arts online, next week.
All good wishes,
Ruth
